Publishing a Shopify store on Google Play

Shopify merchants can list their storefront on Google Play with checkout intact — for physical goods, Google's policy explicitly allows it. This page gives you the policy line, the Data safety answers a Shopify store needs, and the features that make the app more than a bookmark in a reviewer's eyes.

Checkout inside a Play app: allowed, with one exception

Google Play's payments policy: apps selling physical goods or services consumed outside the app may use any payment system. Shopify checkout — including Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay/Google Pay on the web and card processing — runs inside the WebView exactly as in a mobile browser, and that is compliant for a store shipping products.

The exception: digital products. If you sell downloads, digital gift cards redeemable for digital content, or subscriptions to content viewed in the app, Play requires Play Billing for those items. A WebView app cannot route Shopify checkout through Play Billing. Options: hide digital products from the app (a Shopify collection excluded from the app's navigation, or a separate sales channel), or leave them out of the app's catalogue entirely. Gift cards for physical goods are fine.

Data safety answers for a Shopify store

Shopify collects a lot on your behalf. Declare it:

  • Shopify analytics (always on) → App activity, device/other identifiers; purpose: analytics.
  • Customer accounts and checkout → Name, email, phone, address, purchase history; purpose: app functionality; shared with Shopify and the payment provider.
  • Payment card data → Financial info, collected and processed by Shopify Payments or your gateway (declare as collected; encrypted in transit).
  • Marketing apps (Klaviyo, Meta pixel, Google Ads tag) → Advertising data, email; purpose: advertising/marketing; shared with the vendor.
  • Chat apps (Shopify Inbox, Tidio) → Name, message content.
  • OneSignal push → Device identifier.

Shopify's own privacy policy generator covers most of this for your store's policy page; the same page can serve as the app's privacy policy if it mentions the app and push notifications. The Data safety guide maps each item to the console's categories.

Making the app more than the storefront

A wrapped storefront with nothing added is what the minimum-functionality policy is written about. Add, in the builder:

  • Push notifications — order shipped, back in stock, new collection. OneSignal can be triggered by Shopify Flow or by your email marketing tool.
  • Offline screen with your branding.
  • Native menu linked to your top collections, account and cart.
  • Pull to refresh, exit confirmation.

Shopify quirks inside a WebView

  • Checkout is on a different origin for some stores (checkout.shopify.com or a shop.yourdomain.com subdomain). Set external links to open inside the app for your own domains and Shopify's checkout domains, or the cart button will bounce users to the browser mid-purchase. The builder's external-link setting handles this by domain.
  • Shop Pay and payment popups that open new windows must be allowed to open in-app; the builder's WebView supports popups for payment flows.
  • Shopify's cookie banner (if enabled for EU visitors) appears on first launch.
  • Customer accounts (new) use a passwordless email code; make sure the code email is readable on mobile so users complete login inside the app.
  • Password-protected storefront: remove the storefront password before submitting to review, or the reviewer sees a password page and rejects.

The Shop app and app builders, for context

Shopify's Shop channel lists your store inside Shopify's own consumer app; mobile app builders in the Shopify App Store produce native apps for a monthly fee. Neither is your own Play listing. This route gives you a Play listing, under your developer name, for free — with the policy homework above.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify checkout really allowed in a Google Play app?

Yes, for physical goods and services consumed outside the app. Google's payments policy exempts those from Play Billing. Digital products are the exception and must be excluded from the app.

Will Shop Pay work?

Yes. It runs as a web checkout inside the app. Make sure Shopify's checkout domains are set to open in-app, not in the external browser.

Can I list the app if my store sells one digital gift card?

A gift card redeemable for physical products is fine. A card or product redeemable for digital content is not; remove it from the app's catalogue.

What about iPhone customers?

This route produces an Android app only. For iOS, the sister site FreeWebToApp covers add-to-home-screen from Safari, which Shopify themes support via a manifest.
